This June, Palestinians mark 13 years since the start of the Gaza closure.

In 2018, Just Peace Advocates with Al-Haq began the Gaza2020 campaign in Canada. In 2019 we made a clear call to Canada to place sanctions on Israel until at least the blockade on Gaza is lifted. Over 100 organizations have joined in that call over the last 2 years.

It is now June 2020, and we reach out to you to ask if you would be willing to join us in the Gaza2020 international campaign running from June 9 to 16, 2020,.

In Canada, this includes specifically supporting the promotion of the formal government petition, E-2565 sponsored by Paul Manly, that:

requests that Israel immediately lift the blockade on Gaza to enable medical and humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, and insist that Israel permanently end its blockade of Gaza; and vote at the UN General Assembly in alignment with the majority of the international community taking a stance in line with international law and human rights for Palestinians.

If you who would like to support this action, please sign government petition, E-2565.

Our hope is that we can make E-2565 really big with a large number of signatures before it closes in early September.

We also want to support the following specific Palestine based call for action:

Message from Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), Palestinian Centre Human Rights (PCHR).

As the world continues to respond to COVID-19, Palestinians in Gaza are particularly susceptible to the pandemic due to overcrowding, the inability to access adequate water and sanitation, and a healthcare system crippled by successive Israeli military attacks and years of structural violence that denies Palestinians their basic human rights, with impunity.

All aspects of life in the Gaza Strip have been undermined by Israel’s prolonged closure. Since 2012, the UN has repeatedly warned that Gaza would become unliveable by 2020 should Israel fail to lift its illegal closure, which has severely deprived Palestinians of the ability to exercise their individual and collective rights

We are calling for a genuine solidarity movement that will allow us to create the political will to address the root causes of the deprivation of Palestinian’s rights in Gaza and to lift Israel’s illegal closure. The Palestinian people in Gaza need effective measures and meaningful global action and solidarity to let Gaza live and lift the closure with immediate effect.

We will be including information on social media, and be in touch with further actions

A petition to the Human Rights Council and the United Nations Member states for lifting the closure has been prepared which we would be encouraging organizations to share.

*The content of the campaign materials were prepared jointly by Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), Palestinian Centre Human Rights (PCHR).

Rachel Corrie verdict exposes Israeli military mindset
Corrie's parents have not received justice, but their quest reveals the lie of the IDF's claim to be the world's 'most moral army'

Reporters covering Israel are routinely confronted with the question: why not call Hamas a terrorist organisation? It's a fair point. How else to describe blowing up families on buses but terrorism?

But the difficulty lies in what then to call the Israeli army when it, too, at particular times and places, has used indiscriminate killing and terror as a means of breaking Palestinian civilians. One of those places was Rafah, in the southern tip of the Gaza strip, where Rachel Corrie was crushed by a military bulldozer nine years ago as she tried to stop the Israeli army going about its routine destruction of Palestinian homes.
