Israel targets civilian homes in Gaza

Dear New Democratic Party of Canada,

As fellow Canadians who are concerned with human rights, we call on you to condemn Israel's murderous bombing campaign on the defenceless population of Gaza....

We are chagrined that the NDP has yet to speak out against Israel's bombing of civilians in Gaza. These are war crimes, since it is clear that Israel has used its precision-guided missiles to target families' homes, hospitals, schools, ambulances, and even a centre for disabled children. The horrific images coming out of Gaza should elicit strong and immediate condemnation from any individual or organization that is concerned about human rights.

Why then, we are wondering, has the NDP failed to condemn these atrocities?

Reporters covering Israel are routinely confronted with the question: why not call Hamas a terrorist organisation? It's a fair point. How else to describe blowing up families on buses but terrorism?

But the difficulty lies in what then to call the Israeli army when it, too, at particular times and places, has used indiscriminate killing and terror as a means of breaking Palestinian civilians. One of those places was Rafah, in the southern tip of the Gaza strip, where Rachel Corrie was crushed by a military bulldozer nine years ago as she tried to stop the Israeli army going about its routine destruction of Palestinian homes.
