Jeff Halper of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (www.icahd.org) will be speaking in eight Canadian cities later this month. His tour is being coordinated by Independent Jewish Voices - Canada.

Halper is an Israeli peace activist who founded the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. He is an author and organizer and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Halper’s analysis of the Israeli "Matrix of Control" in the West Bank and his conceptualization of the warehousing of Palestinians as "surplus humanity" have contributed significantly to the understanding of the Israeli Occupation. Halper was recently on the first freedom boat into Gaza, attempting to break the on-going Israeli siege of Gaza.

Halper’s main public appearances are as follows. Unless noted otherwise, listed events have multiple local cosponsors:

Halifax - Tuesday, January 13 - place TBA

ICAHD appeal for donations:

Currently ICAHD is in dire straits financially as the result of the recent non-renewal of a very large core funding grant from the European Union, apparently as a result of pressure from right-wing groups within Israel.

The Near East Cultural and Educational Foundation (NECEF) is once again a national cosponsor of Jeff's tour and has undertaken to issue Canadian tax receipts to individual donors to ICAHD. Those who would like to donate to ICAHD by mail or at Jeff's speaking events may do so (filling out cheques if a tax receipt is required.)

There are three ways individuals can donate directly to ICAHD through NECEF:

1. Write a cheque made out to NECEF, with "ICAHD" in the subject line. In this case 100% of your donation will reach ICAHD. Send the cheque to

   NECEF,   20 Bloor St. E., P.O. Box 75090, Toronto, ON M4W 3T3

2. Monthly donations to ICAHD can be arranged through NECEF. Contact Lemma Ibrahim, NECEF.canada@gmail.com for details.

3. Donations to ICAHD can be made through PayPal or CanadaHelps through the NECEF donations page at http://www.necef.org/index_files/page0003.htm.

Note that PayPal charges 4% and CanadaHelps deducts 3% from the donation. So for donations over $15-$20, mailing a cheque is a better option.

Finally, you can support Jeff's Canadian tour by writing a cheque to Independent Jewish Voices and mail it to Mark Etkin, 485 Raglan Rd. Winnipeg, R3G3E4.

(Cheques written to IJV are not tax receiptable.)

National cosponsors of Jeff's tour as of 20 December 2008 are:

Independent Jewish Voices - Canada, NECEF, Canadian Arab Federation, Canadian Auto Workers, Canadian Friends of Sabeel, Canadian Friends Service Committee, KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, Science for Peace, United Jewish People's Order

Adala—Canadian Arab Justice Committee, Boycott Israeli Apartheid Committee (BIAC), Canada-Palestine Association (CPA), Canada-Palestine Support Network (CanPalNet), Jews for a Just Peace (JJP), Canadian Jewish Outlook Magazine, al-Salaam Mosque—Burnaby, Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, Solidarity with Palestinian Human Rights-UBC (SPHR-UBC), Vancouver Quaker Meeting, Voice of Palestine (Co-op Radio).

Discussing Hamas with Gazan Expatriate Samah Sabawi

I caught up with Samah Sabawi on August 1st, 26 days into the Israeli assault on Gaza. Samah is a Canadian Palestinian with family roots in Gaza. I wanted to ask her views on the current situation in Gaza and particularly on the role Hamas is playing. She is a playwright, a policy advisor to AlShabaka and is former public advocate for Australians for Palestine. She was for many years a media spokesperson for National Council for Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) and moved in 2009 to Australia where her parents and many other members of her Palestinian family have found refuge.
