Emergency Protest to Condemn Israeli Attack on Gaza Aid Flotilla

Noon Monday, 300 W Georgia

Edmonton

June 1, 6pm @ the Alberta Legislature, Edmonton:

Emergency rally to support the Freedom Flotilla, which is the biggest convoy of humanitarian aid sent to Gaza in 4 years. They have been attacked by Israel, and according to some reports, over 20 are dead and over 60 injured. Israel's claims that the flotilla organizers "are well known for their ties to global jihad, al-Qaeda and Hamas" is an outright fabrication.

FOR MORE INFO ABOUT TONIGHT'S RALLY CONTACT:

Ottawa

5:00 p.m. at the Human Rights Memorial - Netanyahu is in Ottawa. * Please circulate widely *   Montreal:  3:30 p.m.. Atwater Metro (at rue St. Catherine) Toronto:  5-7PM OUTSIDE ISRAELI CONSULATE (180 Bloor Street West, near Avenue Road)

Israel has used military force on the peaceful flotilla taking humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel has murdered several unarmed civilians (at least 10 confirmed so far). Again we see the Israeli apartheid state acting with full impunity outside the boundaries of international law while the the Harper government welcomes Prime Minister Netanyahu with open arms.

We will be out today to tell Israel and all its supporters it can not get away with its crimes against humanity without worldwide protest.

May 31, 2010 at 11:34 AM

Monday, May 31, 12 Noon at 300 W. Georgia (at Hamilton St)

Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country's siege on Gaza.

Reports are still coming in, but at least 16 people were killed and many more injured when troops stormed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is in Ottawa today, after speaking in Toronto Sunday. As John Ibbitson writes in today's Globe and Mail, "the official portion of Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Ottawa on Monday reflects Canada’s status as Israel’s best friend".

While Harper and Netanyahu meet in Ottawa, activists across Canada and around the world are responding with emergency actions protesting against this outrage.

American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein

Canada/USA 2009. Directors: David Ridgen, Nicolas Rossier
With: Norman Finkelstein, Noam Chomsky, Alan Dershowitz
Colour, Digibeta video. 84 mins.

Pacific Cinémathèque, 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver

VANCOUVER — Pacific Cinémathèque presents American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein, a probing profile of the eponymous political scientist and professional shit disturber. A devoted son of holocaust survivors, ardent critic of Israel and US Mid-East policy, and author of five provocative books including "The Holocaust Industry", Norman Finkelstein has been steadfast at the centre of many intractable controversies.

Called a lunatic and disgusting self-hating Jew by some, and an inspirational street-fighting revolutionary by others, Finkelstein is a deeply polarizing figure whose struggles arise from core questions about freedom, identity and nationhood. He counts Noam Chomsky as a friend, and has made an enemy of the prominent lawyer and Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz. Parts of the film follow Finkelstein on speaking engagements at Canadian universities; à la the recent brouhaha over American conservative Ann Coulter, controversy erupts, testing the meaning and limits of free speech in this society.

Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians slams Canadian Jewish Congress exclusion

PRESS  RELEASE          For immediate Release            2007-07-03

The Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians responded today, to the decision by the Canadian Jewish Congress to deny membership to the progressive Jewish group. The CJC issued a letter which gave no reason for its decision.

“The decision by the Canadian Jewish Congress to exclude the Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians illustrates the sectarian orientation of the forces controlling that organization,” declared ACJC Administrative Secretary Abraham Weizfeld. “The rejection of our application to become a member of the Canadian Jewish Congress and the refusal seat our delegates at the CJC Plenary on June 17th amounts to a refusal to acknowledge growing Jewish opposition to the Israeli occupation and siege of the Palestinian territories.”

“CJC’s refusal to include all tendencies in the Jewish community should be seen as a futile attempt to marginalize growing Jewish opposition to Israel’s behaviour and to the exclusive character of the Israel State,” Weizfeld continued.

He contended that this refusal also motivated the decision by the June 17 plenary of the Canadian Jewish Congress to annul the process of conducting elections to the Board of Directors. As a result of this decision, the Board will now have 25% of its seats reserved for the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy which controls the CJC funding agency, the United Jewish Appeal. Weizfeld explained that these organizations provide unquestioning support to Israel, regardless of what it does.

The resulting vote on a resolution to amend the CJC constitution with regard to election of officers may not have passed if the Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians’ delegates had been included.

“We do not share in the uncritical support for Israel,” Weizfeld stated. “It is our position that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, which began in 1967, must end immediately. This is the view that the ACJC wanted to bring to the Canadian Jewish Congress and that the CJC leadership was determined to ignore.” The refusal to hear our independent voice is proof that the CJC is not a body representative of diverse currents in Canada's Jewish population.

“It is essential that Israel and the Palestinians – including the duly elected Prime Minister Haniyeh – begin negotiations to conclude a lasting peace without prior conditions from either side. Only this approach can put an end to this ongoing tragedy for both the Palestinian and Israeli communities,” he concluded.
