Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign

November 9, 2003 - Vancouver
Do not turn our villages into ghettos! Apartheid Wall Apartheid Wall

Panels with information about the Wall form the mock wall on the day of action in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

On Sunday, November 9, 2003, a coalition of activists constructed a mock wall along Robson Street, Vancouver, B.C. as part of the international day of action against the Apartheid Wall that is being built by the Israeli Government in the occupied Palestinian territories.

This day of action, called by The Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and PENGON (The Palestinian Environmental NGOs Network), marks the 14th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Vancouver construction displayed the path of the Wall as it divides the West Bank into three ghettos. (Between 1994 and 1995, under the Rabin government, Gaza was completely surrounded by a fence and a series of buffer zones. It remains so today.) Images from villages and towns already destroyed by Israeli bulldozers attest to the devastation this confiscation of lands and annexation of settlements is causing the Palestinian people and graphically illustrate how it is destroying any hope of a just peace.

A sunny afternoon in Vancouver, the downtown streets were busy. Many passersby stopped to view the display, ask questions, and voice their support. Discussions were lively. Several thousand information leaflets were distributed The Road Map Hits the Wall. One person stood with an outstretched Israeli flag - Anti-Apartheid Wall campaigners stood with her with banners calling to "End the Israeli Occupation Now" and other messages denouncing the Apartheid Wall.

Any wall created to divide people is doomed. The Berlin Wall, which stood for more than 28 years, eventually fell. We act in the belief that the Apartheid Wall will soon meet the same fate.
